iTunes Tuesday: The Killers

Today is an exciting one for me, because the new Killers album just dropped.  I have been a huge Killers fan since their first major album came out when I was 16.  Listening to Brandon Flowers' captivatingly melodic voice and heartache inducing lyrics always brings me back to my first serious high school boyfriend.  Don't worry, they are happy memories of a silly little girl who fell for every bassist she ever met, not sad emo eyeliner diary entries.

The first single off the new album Battle Born, Runaways, brings me right back to these same memories.  Somehow Flowers has been able to continue to capture the emotions and excitement of first love, and naturally progress those feelings into a mature, full sound and sensation.



Battle Born has a lot of the melodic song qualities found on the Sam's Town album of 2006, but brings back some of the dance hall feel of Hot Fuss (2004).  It creates a nice intersection between rock n roll and club beats making it catchy enough to get you dancing, but also unique enough to make you stop and listen to the poinent lyrics.

Where the Wild Things Are

If you know me at all, you know I love a good faux fur vest. I am so excited to see this trend continue to evolve for Fall 2012. My favorite incarnation of the snuggly warm trend is a collection by Mulberry, whose advertisements alone inspire thoughts of frollicing through forests with some seriously furry friends.  I am also loving the return of Tangerine Tango, Pantone's color of the year, for fall, and can we just talk about the pebbled knits on the twill suiting? To die for!  Are you ready for a faux fur fabulous fall?

Hello Again

It has been a long tome since you have heard from me through this medium, but with fashion week upon us, and my 24th birthday just days behind us, I thought what better  time for me to come out of hiding. I have always found summer to be a magical few months filled with balmy days that are meant for living loudly, loving completely, and dancing wildly. But now, with a pumpkin spice latte and the September issue in hand, it is time to get back to business. 

I have some pretty big plans for this coming fall, but here is a look at a bit of what I have been up to during my post free Summer:

Play Acting

I often pull inspiration for outfits from decades past, the music industry, and movie genres.  This particular outfit was inspired by a combination of all three of these sources.  I was listening to Pandora internet radio when a Barbara Streisand song came on. The album cover instantly spoke to me, and I said THAT is what I am wearing tomorrow.  I love the way the simplicity of the monochromatic pallet contrasts with the drama of the layered pieces.  The best part is this is a look you can easily put together with items already found in your closet.  wearing one color from head to toe also creates a very slimming look, so it is great for those after Super Bowl days.   The drama of the outfit, as well as its inspiration, caused me to feel a tad theatrical when it came time to step away from my keyboard and in front of the camera.  Enjoy the show!

I just wanted to give a quick late birthday shout out to my amazing boyfriend Phil, who takes all of the outfit photos for my blog.  If it weren't for his skills, and let's face it, unending patience, these posts would all be filled with awful Facebook mirror shots! Happy belated birthday, Phil! Thank you for all your hard work and very, VERY long attention span.

International Women of Mystery

A few weeks ago my boyfriend and I took a little trip to Boston's shopping mecca, Newbury Street, to take in the Christmas lights, the tourists, and the sales.  We didn't end up doing much shopping, but I instead spent the day collecting ideas for decorating projects and DIY gifts.  The pre-holiday scene was beautiful, and full of some really interesting crafts and characters, but it was simply too chilly to break out the camera above ground.  After returning to our car, we were so inspired by the eerie look of this metropolitan parking structure, that we just had to snap a few pictures.  With the cars screeching past I felt like a spy just about to escape capture in a foreign land, and while dripping in Jewelmint accessories, I felt properly dressed to kill.

Back in the Swing of Things

So here is 2011 in wrap up: Faux fur, sky high platforms, seventies glam, and Charlie's Angles hair.  We saw Kardashian clothing lines and at least one fairy tale wedding, and one that just couldn't last.  We watched as protesters occupied America, and as politicians dug themselves in deeper holes than they could climb out of.  As much fun as we had with the seventies resurgence, with its uber glamorous fabrics, colors, and oh the hair(!), it seems like we are all ready for something s little cleaner.  

With Spring 12 just around the corner, it is time to take a platformed step into our fashion time machines, and head straight to the mod glam of the swinging sixties.  Don't fret, there is no need to hang up your faux fur vests just yet.  You spent last summer in flowing flower child garb, and now it is time to explore the sleek side of the sixties. So rat your hair, perfect the beehive, don your favorite mini dress, and finish off the look with the perfect winged liquid liner.  From here on in, it is all Twiggy, all the time!
